All states have bats, but not all states have the kinds of bats. In Florida alone, 13 different species take up residence in the state, either throughout the year or seasonally. They differ dramatically from one another, and it can be useful to understand those distinctions in case you encounter one on your property. Here’s what you should know.

What Kinds of Bats Reside in Florida?

1. Evening Bat

Among the most common varieties found in the state is the evening bat. It bears a dark brown fur but may occasionally have a distinct touch of red or bronze. The muzzle, by contrast, is almost black, without any fur, and the bat’s ears are quite short.

This species is often found in bat houses, bridges, and buildings. They’re known to feed on a variety of insects, including beetles and mosquitoes. You’ll find them throughout the state, with the exception of the Florida Keys.

2. Florida Bonneted Bat

The largest bat in the state, the Florida Bonneted Bat features either brown-grey or dark grey fur. Its name is derived from the unusual position of its large ears, which droop slightly over the eyes to create a distinct “bonnet.”

They tend to live in trees and on the crevices of cliffs. Despite its impressive size, this particular bat is rarely found in the state. It’s considered endangered, but when it is found it’s usually in parts of the south.

3. Seminole Bat

Known for its eye-catching mahogany fur, the Seminole bat is usually easy to distinguish from its darker counterparts. In some instances, the fur may feature white tips on the wrists and shoulders.

They’re often found living alone in Spanish moss and pine trees, and like others they enjoy a variety of insects for consumption, including beetles and moths. They’re commonly found throughout Florida, except in the Florida Keys.
