Mastering an instrument is a lifelong pursuit and one that helps children develop valuable skills. It's beneficial to choose an instrument they’re interested in because they’ll stay engaged when they begin music lessons. The following tips can help you and your child find the right instrument.

How to Help Your Child Pick an Instrument

1. Consider Physical Abilities

Some instruments come with greater physical challenges. Young children may lack the strength or hand size to press guitar strings or reach around the instrument. Others will struggle to hold a heavy brass instrument or cello. Consider your child’s abilities to help them choose an instrument they can learn to play correctly. The piano is one of the most popular because the keys are easy to press. Children slightly older can also try smaller-stringed instruments like the violin or viola.

2. Focus on Their Interest

If your child isn’t interested, they’re not going to be dedicated to music lessons and at-home practice. Start with popular instruments. Guitar and piano are favorites because they’re considered “cool” socially. Your child will also recognize them from the music they listen to. Some children have a greater interest in classical music and instruments. If your child is gravitating toward the violin, for example, encourage them to explore it rather than other instruments.

3. Look for Resources and Availability

Music instructors are essential to learning an instrument, and it's important to learn the different types those in your area teach. This can impact which instrument your child chooses. You want to get them off on the right foot with music theory and technique so they can advance quickly.

Explore the instrument sales and rentals that are available in your area and consider what you can accommodate. For example, you may not have space for a piano in your home and are better off exploring smaller brass and string instruments.
