Dance classes provide a wide variety of benefits for children, including improved physical fitness, opportunities to socialize, and the ability to express themselves creatively. If you think dance lessons could be ideal for your child, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Review them among other faqs here.

What You Need to Know About Dance Classes

What age should I enroll my child?

Dance studios offer classes for children as young as 2 or 3, or when little ones start developing motor skills. However, the right time for your child is whenever they appear ready. Most kids indicate their readiness in numerous ways, such as talking about dancing, watching dancers on television and trying to follow along, or dancing whenever they hear music. Children can also express interest in dance accessories, such as toe shoes and tutus, or ask you to watch them dance to their favorite songs.

Is there a type of dance that’s best to start with?

Many children start with ballet classes, since this type of dance provides a technical foundation for learning other styles. Other popular options include tap and hip-hop. The right dance styles for children typically depend on their interests and personalities. For example, if your child can easily focus and loves the graceful movements of ballet, enroll them in ballet dance class. Conversely, if your child has a big personality and is always improvising dance moves, hip-hop could be ideal.

What should my child wear to class?

Loose, bulky clothing should be avoided, since these clothes encumber dance moves and can even cause your child to trip and fall. Leotards, tights, and similar dancewear are usually best, since they allow your child to move easily and help the instructors make form-related corrections. Many dance studios provide guidelines for what students should wear in different classes.

How can I support my tiny dancer outside of the studio?

Encouraging words are always welcomed, such as saying “You have learned so much, I am so proud of you!” and “I am so happy that you stuck with this routine and mastered the dance steps. I knew you would!” It also helps to ensure your child gets restful sleep and enjoys a healthy diet, so they have energy for their dance classes. Tired children are more injury-prone.
