On its surface, the martini is a fairly simple cocktail. But subtle variations in the mix and whether you choose vodka or gin can have a profound impact on its flavor. Knowing how to order a martini ensures you get a drink you’ll love and give you an unmistakable feeling of class.

How to Order a Martini

1. Choose a Liquor

Martinis are usually made with vodka or gin. If you don’t specify which one you want, the bartender will likely assume you want gin. This might be perfect for you, but some people prefer the cleaner taste of vodka. Stating which liquor you prefer when placing the order will help you avoid confusion and disappointment.

2. Ask for “Dry” or “Wet”

“Dry” and “wet” refer to the proportion of liquor and vermouth. A standard martini usually has one part of vermouth to four parts vodka or gin. The splash of vermouth gives the martini its characteristic botanical aroma.

A “wet” martini has a higher percentage of vermouth and, therefore, a lower alcohol content. If you order your drink “dry,” you’ll get less of the vermouth taste and a stronger cocktail.

3. Choose a Glass

The traditional martini glass is elegant, but it can be awkward to hold, especially if you’re walking across a room. However, it does mean your drink was shaken with ice and strained, so it won’t get diluted if you drink slowly.

Tumblers are more practical and less likely to spill, but martinis in a normal glass are typically served with ice. Over time, the ice will probably melt, diluting your carefully mixed martini.
