3 Tips to Prepare a Car for a Salvage Yard
If you have an old vehicle that doesn't run and requires too much work to fix, taking it to a salvage yard for recycling is an excellent way to get rid of it. These facilities will pay you for the scrap metal and components, which can help you recoup some of your investment. Plus, this is an environmentally responsible decision, as the components can be reused for future manufacturing. Below are several strategies to follow before you drop the car off.
What Should You Do Before Taking a Vehicle to a Salvage Yard?
1. Remove Personal Items
Even if you haven't driven the car in a while, you may have accidentally left personal possessions inside of it. Go through the car and take out anything that belongs to you. Check the glove box, between the seats, under the floor mats, and in the trunk for loose change and other items. Pay special attention to anything that has personal information, such as insurance cards or registration documents. This ensures you don't accidentally throw away something that is important.
2. Cancel the Registration & Insurance
If the car is still insured, call your agent to tell them you are scrapping it so that they can cancel the policy. After that, cancel the registration. In Ohio, you can do this by downloading the form from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) website, filling it out, and returning it to the state. The form must be notarized for it to be legally binding. While you don't have to return the license plates, take them off before heading to the salvage yard.
3. Transfer the Title
When the salvage yard takes possession of the vehicle, you must transfer ownership by filling out and signing the form on the back of the title. If you do not have the title, contact the BMV and request a new copy. After filling out the information, make a copy of the completed title for your records.
