Your car battery is responsible for powering the vehicle's key electronics, including the lights, radio, and security system. However, just like any battery, the one in the car doesn't last forever. Below are a few signs that it's time to replace this crucial component.

4 Signs Your Car Battery Needs to Be Replaced

1. Electronics Act Irradically

Your vehicle uses power for a variety of functions beyond starting the engine. Power is required for running the dashboard lights, displays, radio, headlights, and power steering. If the battery isn't able to supply enough energy, these may start acting strangely. For example, it could become more difficult to turn the steering wheel if the power steering is affected, or the lights may appear dimmer or off even when turned on.

2. Requires Frequent Jump-Starts

If you leave your lights on overnight, the car battery will drain and it'll require a jump-start. However, if your car regularly needs a jump-start regardless of leaving the lights on, then it's experiencing other issues. For instance, the battery may be old and simply can't hold a long-term charge. Or, something else in the engine is causing the battery to slowly drain, even when it's not being used. Lastly, the problem could be with the terminal causing the connector to slip off.

3. It's Visually Damaged

Visual symptoms can be some of the easiest to spot. If the battery is cracked or leaking acid, then it needs to be replaced right away. Chemicals in batteries can be harmful, making an expedited replacement even more important. Inspect for signs of swelling as well, which means it's overcharged or developing too much heat inside.

4. Has a Rotten Egg Smell

If you smell an odor that reminds you of rotten eggs when you're inside the car, there may be a leak. This can be the result of hydrogen sulphide escaping the car battery, which only occurs if there's damage.
