Your vehicle's tires are its only connection to the road, so it is essential that you keep them in top condition and replace them when necessary. If they need replacement, used tires are an affordable and environmentally friendly option. However, to optimize safety and handling, be sure they are of top quality. Below are some key suggestions when buying previously-owned tires.

What Are Some Tips for Buying Used Tires?

1. Examine Tread Depth

Tread depth is perhaps the most important factor when buying used tires. New models feature a depth of about 12/32", and a depth of 4/32" indicates the tire should be replaced.

Test depth with a tread depth gauge, or insert a U.S. quarter into a furrow. George Washington's face and forehead should be mostly covered. If it is visible, the tire is showing too much wear. Also, tread wear should be even across both sides of the tire.

2. Check the Age

The sidewall of a tire features a series of numbers and letters, usually beginning with "DOT". The last pair of numbers in the sequence indicate its year of manufacturing. For instance, a "19" would reveal the tire was made in 2019.

Even if the treads seem in good condition, never buy a tire that is more than 6 years old, and the newer it is, the better. Rubber can deteriorate over time, especially when exposed to the sun's UV radiation. This weakens it and puts the tire at greater risk of a blowout.

3. Avoid Obvious Defects

Examine any used tire you consider buying for obvious exterior defects. The rubber should be smooth, dark, and free of blemishes. Avoid any tire that exhibits cracks, bulges, or exposed chords.

Visible tire chords indicate far too much wear, while sidewall damage weakens the tire and is difficult to repair. Look for signs of previous patching, which, if performed improperly, could provide a point of slow leakage.
