3 Tips for Buying Used Tires
Tires are a pricey auto part to replace, so buying a used set can save you considerable money. As with buying anything used, however, you need to shop carefully to find a set that is in a safe condition, and that meets your needs. Know what to look for as you shop around the salvage yard, and you can be confident that you’ve selected the right used tires.
Guide to Shopping for Used Tires
1. Check the Age
Tire rubber deteriorates over time, so even if the tire appears to have limited wear, you don’t want to buy an old set. Generally, you should only buy tires that were manufactured within the past six years. Check the age by looking at the sidewall. Look at the Department of Transportation (DOT) number, which has four digits. The first two digits tell you which week of the year it was made, and the second two digits tell you the year.
2. Measure Tread Wear
The tread tells you how much life the tires have left since they are responsible for maintaining your grip on the road. A new tire usually has between 10/32” and 12/32” of tread depth, and you don’t want to buy anything under 4/32”. Buy a tire depth gauge and use it to measure the tread depth in the area with the most wear. These are usually inexpensive and are easy to use.
3. Look for Unusual Wear
Tire lifespan depends significantly on how well they are maintained, and neglected tires will often show damage if you know where to look. Check the tread for uneven wear, such as one section that has wear with brand-new tread in other areas. This means they were not balanced or rotated. Improper repairs are also a red flag, such as repaired punctures within an inch of the sidewall.
