As the holidays approach, business owners are focused on helping customers, meeting end-of-year-goals, and preparing to enjoy time with their families. While the holidays are certainly a time of profit and celebration, they’re also the season of increased theft and risk of damage. While high-tech security systems will protect your building, there are still a few things you can do to further improve safety around the holidays. Here are a few helpful tips to keep your business as protected as possible.

4 Tips to Enhance Your Business Security Systems

1. Inspect or Install Camera Systems

ISecurity Systemsf you already have security cameras in place, take a moment to inspect each one to ensure that they’re working properly. The video signal should be clear and record without interruption. If anything looks off, schedule a repair appointment as soon as possible. If you don’t have cameras installed, consider installing a few of them before the holidays. Placing them on the sales floor, near entrances and exits, and in the stock room will discourage employee theft, shoplifting, and return fraud. If an incident does occur, you’ll also have video footage to help you catch the culprit.

2. Update Closing Procedures

Unfortunately, thieves are more likely to steal from businesses during the holidays than at any other time, putting your closing team at risk. If the store is normally closed by a single person, have another employee join them. Make sure they understand how to set the alarm before they leave and consider installing a silent burglar alarm under the register so your staff can call for help.

3. Schedule Cash Pickups Throughout the Day

Large amounts of cash in tills may be tempting for thieves and robbers and lead them to target your store. Limit the risk of large losses by making sure that criminals will only be able to get their hands on small amounts of cash. Run a report on the registers every couple of hours and if the money in the till is higher than $400, take some out and store it in the safe.

4. Lock Up

When the store is closed for the holidays, make sure the entrances are locked properly. This includes windows, roof-top access areas, and garage bay doors. Before leaving, arm the security systems, cameras, and alarms to catch any unauthorized activity while the building is closed. If you’ve been targeted recently, ask the police to drive by on patrol.
