A faulty electrical system is a major safety hazard. Each year, approximately 51,000 house fires are caused by electrical malfunctions. That's why you should reach out to a licensed electrician to repair or replace faulty components. Here are additional steps you can take to reduce the risk of electrical fires.

How to Prevent Electrical Fires in Your Home

1. Limit Use of Space Heaters

Space heaters are responsible for one-third of house fires during winter. Flammable objects that are situated near a radiation space heater could overheat and catch on fire. Space heaters also have a 1500-watt input, while the extension cords used to power the appliances are typically 1000 watts.

This could lead to an electrical circuit overload that causes the appliance or cord to spark. To reduce the risk of space heater-related fires, only use the appliances in rooms that are occupied and set them at 1/2 of the operating capacity.

2. Don't Overload Outlets

Plugging numerous electrical devices into one outlet is a bad idea. That's because more electrical current will flow through the outlet than it's designed to accommodate. When too much electricity passes through the outlet, it could overheat and start to smolder to the point it catches on fire.

To prevent this problem, have an electrician install surge protectors on outlets. When the voltage level is too high, a surge protector will send the excess electricity to the outlet's grounding wire. The technician can also install more outlets, so you won't have to plug numerous devices into one wall socket.

3. Keep Flammable Objects Away From Outlets

Go through your home and garage and make sure household items aren't touching electrical outlets. If an outlet overloads, the heat generated could catch flammable items that are pushed against the outlet on fire. This includes bedding, furniture, boxes, curtains, rugs, gasoline cans, and vessels that contain other flammable liquids.
