Concrete is a durable material that's commonly used to construct pools. It’s favored for its strength and longevity, but it can still develop unsightly cracks over time.  These imperfections aren't just aesthetically displeasing; they can also compromise the structural integrity of your swimming pool. Here are a few common reasons why these cracks occur.

What Causes Pool Concrete to Crack?

1. Soil Moisture Levels

It’s rare for soil to cause damage to concrete, but it can happen if there are extreme fluctuations. If the soil has been exceptionally dry for a lengthy period and then becomes wet regularly, it could expand enough to put pressure on the pool’s shell. This can eventually force the concrete to develop cracks. This issue is more likely to happen in the event of an extreme weather event or a flood.

2. Lack of Winterization

It’s important to close your pool properly at the end of the season. This involves cloaking it with a pool cover and winterizing the structure so that it won’t suffer the effects of colder weather.

Snow can put significant pressure on your swimming pool’s concrete. This can lead to minuscule cracks that worsen with time. As the concrete warms up again, it contracts and dries, causing even more damage to the surface.

You can prevent cracking by draining water to the equalizer point; make sure to leave some water behind. The pool should never be completely empty. Otherwise, the pressure level will be too low and may cause the floor to shift during the colder months.

3. Hydrostatic Pressure Events

A pool that's empty is at greater risk of suffering the effects of hydrostatic water pressure, leaving the shell at risk of popping out of place. Even if it moves just slightly, that could be enough to cause cracks in the concrete.

Hydrostatic relief plugs are typically installed throughout the base of the pool to prevent this damage. When you drain the pool, open these plugs so that the pressurized groundwater will simply flow into your pool. This will relieve the pressure and prevent cracks.
