The pool pump is the heart and soul of your swimming pool. It draws in water from the pool and circulates it through a filter, a heater, and other equipment. Pump problems can result in algae growth, dirty water, and more. Below are some tips to help you identify if you need a new pump for your swimming pool.

What Are the Signs You Need a New Pool Pump?

1. Unusual Noises

When all is operating as it should, the pump should make very little noise. However, grinding, squealing, or other unusual sounds could mean the equipment is failing. Before you replace the pump, you should check the filtration system for a blockage. Make sure the water level is above the skimmer, or the system could be drawing in air, which can lead to noise. Finally, check for loose mounting brackets and objects preventing movement of the impeller.

2. Increased Energy Bills

If you find your energy usage has increased dramatically when you run the pump, it likely means the equipment is failing. When internal parts wear out, they produce more heat, friction, and noise. Because it doesn't run smoothly, the motor consumes more electricity and may not be able to keep up with the demands you place on it.

3. Older Pump

The average life span of a pool pump is around 60 months of use. Thus, if you open the pool for only half the year, you should be able to get 10 seasons of use from the pool pump. If yours has reached or exceeded this expected life span, it's likely time to have it replaced. This is particularly true if you are also noticing any of the other symptoms mentioned above.
