Friends and family splashing around is one of the ways a swimming pool loses water. However, this can also happen through evaporation. There are several causes of pool evaporation, but there are also numerous ways to avoid related water losses. Here are a few common evaporation reasons and what you can do about them.

What Causes Swimming Pool Water Evaporation?

1. Sunlight Exposure

For many homeowners, a pool in direct sun adds to the installation’s fun. It allows swimmers to get their vitamin D and remain comfortable, since a pool in near-constant shade can become too cold. However, a swimming pool that is exposed to sunlight on a regular basis causes the water to heat up and start evaporating. The more sunlight exposure the pool receives, the more water it loses. To sidestep this issue, keep a cover on the pool when it is not in use. If you are planning a pool installation for the first time, choose an area with ample tree cover. Solid fences or thick hedges surrounding the pool also reduce evaporation issues by blocking wind.

2. Lacking Humidity

Pools and anything else with water as a component do not experience serious evaporation in humid climates. The same cannot be said for dry heat—the drier the hot air, the quicker the pool or product loses water. If you live in an area of the country that does not experience humidity during late spring, summer, and early fall, keep your pool covered as much as possible to avoid severe water loss. Solar pool covers are considered the best at reducing evaporation because of their heat-absorbing abilities. Trees, fences, and shrubbery help as well.

3. High Temperatures

Skyrocketing temperatures cause swimming pool water to evaporate, especially if the heat is dry. Try turning the water temperature down to slow evaporation processes and enjoy a more refreshing pool on scorchingly hot days. If you can, keep your pool relatively cool throughout the summer if you live in a region known for super-hot weather during June, July, and August. If your current pool fence is not solid, such as a chain-link fence, think about replacing it with a wooden or vinyl version to shield your pool from wind and heat.
