Practicing martial arts is a fun way to get in shape—and from kids’ karate courses to self-defense classes for adults, there are suitable options for every age. Whatever activity you pursue, stretching is an essential part of any training program; without it, you put yourself at risk for injuries like prolonged soreness and torn muscle fibers. Not only do these conditions set back your training, but they can also cause serious pain.

The following three stretches are important for all martial arts students, whether you're a longtime participant or just starting out.

1. Hamstring Stretch

self defense classes Middletown NYTight hamstrings will get in the way of the high kicks you’re trying to perfect. Stretch these muscles out and avoid injury with a standing bent-knee hamstring stretch. Simply raise one foot, keeping your leg bent and bringing the knee into the chest. Resting your foot against a stable surface like table or wall can help you get a deeper stretch.

2. Sitting Hamstring Stretch

martial arts Middletown NYYou can also stretch your hamstrings sitting down. Sit on the floor with one leg straight out in front of you, toes pointed upwards. Bring you other foot in to your knee or thigh. Reach for the toes of the extended leg with your hands. If you can’t reach your toes yet, go for the ankle instead and keep practicing. Don't overextend yourself when you're starting this stretch—you could pull a muscle.

3. Reverse Chest Stretch

martial arts Middletown NYYou’ll need a chair, bench, or similarly stable surface for this stretch. Squat with your back against the chair or bench, and place your hands on the edges for support. Bend your arms and slowly lower your entire body to loosen your chest muscles.

With these basic stretches, you can help avoid straining and injury when practicing martial arts.
