Martial arts lessons are an excellent way to learn self-defense, stay active, and train your body and mind. Taekwondo and karate are popular forms of martial arts, but those new or unfamiliar with them are often unable to differentiate between them. The guide below explains what separates the two styles, as well as what makes them similar.

Taekwondo

This form of martial arts originates from Korea and emphasizes footwork. Students learn a variety of kick moves, including flashy jumping and spinning kicks. This technique is often used to distract opponents into leaving themselves open for attack.

In taekwondo competitions, judges award more points for kicks than punches. If you watch taekwondo tournaments, you’ll notice competitors focusing mainly on footwork. Traditional taekwondo lessons typically don’t involve weapons; however, some classes do employ common martial arts weapons, such as nunchaku, Eskrima sticks, and the bo staff.

Karate

karateOriginally from Japan, karate is one of the most widely recognized forms of martial arts. In contrast with taekwondo, this style promotes a balance between hand and foot techniques. This is why karate tournaments give equal points for kicks and punches. Although both forms teach self-defense, karate places more of a focus on it. Weapons are more prevalent in karate lessons and will be taught during class. Kids’ classes use padded, child-safe nunchaku and bo staffs to practice techniques.

How Are They Similar?

Both styles teach respect, discipline, inner growth, and balance. No matter which class you choose, you’ll learn a series of kicks, punches, and blocks, each used to a varying degree. Students start with the fundamentals and basic stances, which helps build a foundation for more advanced techniques. It can be difficult to choose which form will be best for you, but either way, you’ll gain valuable skills, get a good workout, meet new people, and have fun.
