In Connecticut, moving violations result in points being added to your license. If you accumulate enough points, your driving privileges may be revoked. Moreover, insurers use your license points in part to calculate your auto insurance premiums. Drive safe and use the following guide to learn how points could impact your insurance coverage.

What You Should Know About Driving Points

The Connecticut License Point Schedule

The state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) classifies moving violations into five categories. The worse the offense, the more points are added to your driving record. The point schedule is as follows:

  • 1 Point: Added for minor violations, like speeding, improper signaling, and making illegal turns.
  • 2 Points: Assessed for disobeying traffic signs, including Stop and Yield, and disobeying the instructions of a police officer.
  • 3 Points: Added for violations that breach safety norms, such as following too closely, passing on the right, failure to give way to a safety vehicle, and driving while impaired.
  • 4 Points: Received for harassing behavior and failure to stop for a stopped school bus.
  • 5 Points: This is reserved for the most serious circumstances, such as vehicular homicide or improper operation of a school bus.

If you accumulate six points, you’ll receive a warning from the DMV. After 10 points, your license will be suspended for 30 days. Points stay on your license for two years after the offense. Note that non-moving violations — such as failure to wear a seat belt or excessive muffler noise — normally don’t result in added points.

How Points Affect Your Insurance

auto insuranceInsurers evaluate insurance points based, in part, on your license points. They also add points for accidents you've had or claims you've filed. In general, the more points you have, the more you will pay for auto insurance. In fact, if you accumulate enough points, the insurer may decline to renew your policy. However, with the court's permission, if you pass a safe driving class, you may be able to remove some points from your driving record.
