With warm weather and more daylight hours, exploring Missouri’s trails on your bike is a fun activity to enjoy this summer. The professionals at Jim’s Bike & Key Shop in Columbia know proper maintenance will keep your bicycle running smoothly throughout the season.

Below, the staff at this local bike shop shares four summer upkeep tips to improve your bike’s safety and performance:

  • bikesWipe Down After Each Ride: Dirt and debris collect on bikes during each ride. Over time, the buildup could interfere with mechanical components. After each outing, wipe down the bike and spray lubricate on the chain, as this will prevent slow speeds, stuck gears, and additional problems down the line.
  • Fill Tires With Air: Similar to the tires on your car, bike tires need the proper amount of air to protect against damage on the road. If the tires are too soft, the rubber will puncture it when it makes contact with rough surfaces. Before you ride, check the tire pressure, and fill it with air as needed.
  • De-grease the Drivetrain: The drivetrain is the part of the bike that allows it to move forward. The mechanical component, along with its cogs and chain, can get clogged with dirty grease. To clean it, spread de-greaser over the components and then, rinse it with water. You can use a toothbrush to clean hard-to-reach areas, and once the chain is dry, apply new lubricant.
  • Adjust Gears: If the gears aren’t adjusted correctly, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to peddle. Adjust the chain on the sprockets to switch gear settings. You can also visit your local bike mechanic to ensure the job is done correctly.
