While you may not use your bike as often during the colder months, winter in Missouri is usually mild, which means you can still take it out occasionally. However, cycling during this time introduces new challenges, so you have to be prepared to take care of your bicycle properly. Here are several strategies to help you with this process.

How Can You Care for a Bike During the Cold Season?

1. Check the Tires

A sudden drop in temperature can cause your tire pressure to decrease. This increases the risk of a flat tire while you are riding, so check the pressure at least once each week and fill the tires when they drop below the recommended level. If the weather warms quickly, check the tires to make sure they don't have too much pressure. During these inspections, pay close attention to the condition of the rubber. If you spot any cracks, holes, or worn tread, replace the tires to ensure safety while riding.

2. Wash the Bike

Salt is commonly used to melt ice and snow on roads, and it can corrode the metal frame of your bicycle. To prevent this, wash the bike at least once a week using a mild detergent and warm water. Start from the top and carefully scrub the frame downward until you reach the tires. After washing, use a dry cloth to remove excess water to prevent rust from forming.

3. Lubricate the Chain

After washing and drying the bike, apply oil to the chain. Removing debris before lubricating it ensures it can move smoothly, helping you accelerate and power the bicycle. While using the oil, inspect the connections on the chain for signs of wear. If they appear stretched or have visible damage, replace the entire chain. This prevents it from snapping during your next outing, keeping you safe while riding.

4. Prioritize Safety

Winter means shorter days and longer nights, so attach a battery-powered light to your bicycle. This makes you more visible on trails and streets if the sun goes down while you are riding. Also, wet weather is more common, which means it can take longer to stop. Inspect the braking system to make sure it is functioning properly. Finally, keep a first-aid kit with you so that you can tend to minor injuries easily.
