Whether on a long excursion or a short trip in the neighborhood, hopping onto your bicycle is an enjoyable way to appreciate a beautiful day in the open air. Nothing can spoil the fun as much as a flat tire. Being unprepared and lacking the know-how to fix the flat can leave you stranded. Here is a guide to prepare you for the eventuality of a tire repair and get you pedaling on your way.
5 Steps to Take When You Get a Flat on Your Bike
1. Take the Tire Off the Frame
Use the quick release lever if your bicycle has one, or remove the nut holding the wheel to the frame with a wrench to remove the wheel from the bike frame. Detach the brake cables and lift the chain off the gears to prevent damage.
2. Remove the Tube and Tire
Be prepared with bicycle levers to remove the inner tube from inside the tire. These tools get inserted under the tire bead. The bead is the trim for the edge of the tire that sits on the wheel. Insert one lever on each side and slide the levers until the tire is pulled away from the rim, allowing you the space to reach in and remove the inner tube. Once the inner tube is removed, roll or twist the tire, working around the outside of the wheel to get it free.
3. Examine for Punctures
Check the tire and the inner tube and locate any damage. The inner tube can be patched or replaced in most instances, and your tire will be fine. If the tire is damaged, it will need replacing.
4. Inflate the Tube
Remove the dust cap, lock ring, and valve cover, and use a bike pump to inflate the tube slightly to help it hold its shape and prevent damage from pinching, bending, or twisting during installation.
5. Replace the Tire and Wheel
With the tread in the right direction, slide the air valve through the valve hole and feed the inner tube into the tire. Then, twist the tire to slip it into the wheel rim, starting near the valve and ending across from it. Use a tire lever to help as the tire gets tighter around the rim. Reinstall the lock ring or valve retaining nut, pump the tire with air, and secure the wheel to the frame. Reattach the brakes, replace the gear chain, and your bicycle is ready for you to resume your journey.
