Ingrown toenails are among the most common foot conditions and typically affect big toes, though any nail can be affected. Such toenails grow into the skin, causing discomfort among other symptoms. Learn more about the condition here, including what treatment options are available.

A Guide to Ingrown Toenails

What are they?

Ingrown nails typically feature sharp corners and fail to grow straight out over the skin. Instead, they curve downward and dig into the skin on the side of your toe, causing pain. Such toenails can also feel warm to the touch, appear red and swollen, and feature discharge, or pus if they become infected.

What causes them?

Incorrect nail trimming is arguably the main reason for ingrown toenails, whether the affected nail is cut too short, too round, or both. Trauma can also cause ingrown problems, such as a heavy object getting dropped on the toe or constant pressure from poorly-fitting shoes. These issues cause the nail to break off incorrectly and grow into the skin.

Since big toes feature thicker nails that are harder to cut and can press on ill-fitting shoes, they are the most likely to become ingrown. A history of this condition in your family can also increase your risk.

How are they treated?

Allowing the nail to grow out, soaking the affected toe daily in warm, salty water to prevent infection, and wearing comfortable footwear with ample toe room treats ingrown nail problems. If the nail does not feel better after a few days or appears more inflamed and red with discharge, see a podiatrist immediately. You might need special ointments and antibiotics to kill the infection and prevent further problems.

How can I prevent this toenail issue?

Cut all toenails straight across, and avoid wearing shoes with pointy toes that do not provide sufficient “wiggle room.” Never cut out an existing ingrown toenail, as it will just keep growing back into the skin and causing further discomfort. Discuss nail trimming techniques with your podiatrists if you still have issues with ingrown nails.
