If you have a classic car and plan to present it at an auto show, cleaning it is an essential part of getting it ready. With so many people coming and going, keeping the vehicle shiny will ensure it stands out and impresses attendees. Given the age and rarity of a classic car, you need to be especially careful to prevent damaging it during the cleaning process. Here's how to do it correctly.

How to Clean a Classic Car for An Auto Show

1. Hand Wash Using Automotive Cleaners

For the best and most thorough clean without causing damage, wash your car by hand. Automatic car washes use broad brushes that can't get into every crevice. They're also quite rough, especially on the paint and chrome finishes.

Instead, use soft sponges or microfiber mitts and a nonabrasive cleaning solution designed for vehicles. Do not use dishwashing detergent. As gentle as it may be on your plates and hands, it's not intended to protect the car finishes and will dull the surfaces.

2. Lift Before Vacuuming

At an auto show, people will be looking at all the details, including the interior. For the carpeting, avoid the temptation of using a vacuum immediately, especially on dirty spots and along the trim.

While they are efficient at removing particles, the brushes can actually push the dirt deeper into the fibers. To bring those particles to the surface, use a compressed air duster on those areas first. Doing so will move the debris upwards and allow you to vacuum it away easily.

3. Dry Thoroughly

Excess water and the resulting rust are problematic for any vehicle, but they're even more damaging to the older frames of classic cars, which might have more exposed metal areas. As such, you need to be diligent and dry every area thoroughly after washing the exterior surfaces. Replace your towels as necessary and use a chamois if possible since it's much better at absorbing water.

Once your classic car is clean, you'll be ready to show it off at the Charlotte AutoFair. For over 30 years, this four-day event has attracted car enthusiasts from throughout the region. Not only will you get a chance to show off your vehicle, but if you're looking to buy another or sell yours, you can do so as well. There will also be vendors for various automotive products.
