From daily commutes to weekend getaways, driving is something that many people can’t avoid. The position you sit in while driving can impact the amount of pressure you put on your back. If you experience back pain while driving, implement these five tips, and see if the pain subsides.

How to Protect Your Back in the Car

1. Support Your Back

Angle your seat so that your whole back, from your bottom to your shoulders, can touch the backrest. This results in your body being at a 100-degree angle. While 130 degrees is best for your back while seated, you would not be able to see past the steering wheel. This is the best compromise to protect your back, and it also allows you to lay your head on the headrest so that you do not strain your neck by leaning forward. If your lower back cannot quite touch the back of the seat, purchase lumbar support for your seat or roll a sweatshirt up and place it in between the seat and your back. With your back firmly secured, now position your mirrors so that you do not have to twist or lean to see through them.

2. Position Your Legs

Push your seat forward or backward to keep your legs curved at a 90-degree angle. Try to keep your thighs fully on your seat so that that your knees bend where the seat bends. This helps to avoid pressure in your knees, which reduces circulation. If you feel this pressure, check to make sure your legs are at a 90-degree angle and re-position when necessary.

3. Vary Your Arm Positions

4. Take Breaks

If you are in the car for a long road trip or stuck in traffic for longer than an hour, pull over for a few minutes. Get out of the car and stretch your back, move your joints, and rotate your hips and knees to take the pressure off your spine.

5. Perfect Your Posture

Driving home after a long day of work is the perfect time to loosen your tie, turn on the radio, and sink into a slouched position without thinking. Consciously check that your back is straight while you drive. Also, if you carry your wallet in your back pocket, take it out while you drive. Even though your wallet may seem small, it can throw off the symmetry of your hips and spine.
