Metal can be used in a variety of projects to produce a durable, attractive finished product. However, if one of your projects requires working with it, such as galvanized or aluminum sheet metal, taking certain safety precautions will prevent potentially serious injury. Even if your team has some experience working with metal, establishing a culture of safety where everyone follows the same procedures and takes precautions to protect themselves and others will help keep everyone safe on the job. Here are some tips to make sure everyone knows how to avoid injury.

How to Stay Safe When Working With Sheet Metal

1. Be Aware of Sharp Edges

The edges of any piece of aluminum sheet metal are sharp, so simply running your finger along them can result in a deep cut. Always wear thick, durable gloves when working with sheet metal to protect your hands from the sharp edges. Cutting galvanized or aluminum sheet metal can also produce small pieces of sharp debris. Wear safety goggles when cutting metal, and remind others to maintain a safe distance from the work area to avoid being hit by debris.

2. Avoid Burns

Aluminum sheets, as well as other types of metal, easily conduct heat and cold. Storing or working with metal near a heat source can cause it to get hot quickly, potentially causing severe burns. Working with metal outdoors in the cold can also get it cold enough to cause frostbite on unprotected fingers. Take care to keep metal away from open flames and other heat sources, and wear protective gloves when working in cold weather.

3. Protect Your Lungs

Working with sheet metal can fill the air with dust particles. Breathing in this dust can cause respiratory illness and potentially contribute to serious disease. Always wear a respirator mask when working around metal to avoid inhaling it. Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water when you're done, even if you wear gloves, can also help keep the dust from spreading.
