Tarot decks may differ in size and style, but they all follow the same card structure. Each deck contains 78 cards, and those 78 are divided into suits, elements, and classes. Every card belongs to either the major or the minor arcana. Here’s more information on what these classifications mean.

Major Arcana

There are 22 cards in the major arcana, and they all belong to the same suit, known as the Trump cards. These can include characters like the Magician, the High Priestess, or the Lovers. The cards are numbered 0-21. While the minor arcana can describe specific events, places, or people, the major arcana speaks to something larger happening in your life. They can represent karmic influences or existential themes, so each card more open to interpretation.

The main hero of the major arcana is the Fool, in which every other character can be seen in relation to. The Fool goes on a journey through life; with each key character he meets, he learns a new life lesson. These are overarching themes in your life — insight into the building blocks of your personality and path. If your reading includes many major arcana cards, it can mean you are heading into a transitional moment.

Minor Arcana

There are 56 minor arcana cards in every tarot deck, each reflecting everyday life and the issues affecting it. This arcana is divided into four suits: Cups, Pentacles, Swords, and Wands. Within each suit, you’ll find 10 numbered cards and four court cards: the Page, the King, the Queen, and the Knight.

Each suit represents different energies that may be flowing through your life. The suit of Cups, for example, represents emotions, creativity, and intuition. The suit of Pentacles is more practical, representing financial and material possessions. The suit of Swords is about your internal mental process, your voice, and your agency. Finally, the suit of Wands is your energy, motivation, and passions. While these cards can indicate more temporary events than the major arcana, they are equally important to discovering insight in your reading.
