There are 78 cards in a tarot deck. Twenty-two of these cards comprise the major arcana, the main emblematic images in a tarot reading. The minor arcana is made up of the remaining 56 cards, and the images on these cards give further depth, shape, and clarification to the messages relayed by the cards of the major arcana. In the minor arcana, there are four main suits of cards, each of which is described in more detail below.

An Introduction to Tarot Card Suits

1. Pentacles

Pentacle cards represent what has manifested itself in the physical world. In relation to the major arcana, they indicate physical phenomena such as health, wealth, and material matters. When viewed as part of the minor arcana, Pentacle cards zero in on more specific corporeal and worldly concerns, like home, abundance, charity, groundedness, and responsibility.

2. Wands

The suit of Wands is a symbol of the muse — creative energies and divinely inspired work. As an influence on the major arcana, it’s a sign of creativity, action, purpose, and passion. These signs take on even more precise meaning in the minor arcana, signaling traits like ambition, drive, impulse control, ingenuity, and inspiration.

3. Cups

Cup cards encompass the depths and complexities of human emotion. In the major arcana, these cards address broader matters relating to love and empathy. However, given the intricacies of the emotional world, it's up to the minor arcana to break down these feelings into individual sense experiences. Depending on the layout, Cup cards can represent sensual pleasures, temptation, obsession, completeness, or inclusion, to name a few possibilities.

4. Swords

The Swords suit addresses issues relating to the mind and one's thought processes. From the perspective of the major arcana, Sword cards are all about thinking, strategizing, challenging, and observing. As usual, the minor arcana pinpoints the various ways these overarching ideas can play out as specific experiences in a person's life: control, clarity, intelligence, certainty or uncertainty, and confidence.
