When you've been prescribed an orthotic device for the first time, the amount of information you're presented with can feel a bit overwhelming. Taking the time to familiarize yourself with the type of device you'll be using can help ease any anxiety or fear of the unknown. Here is a brief guide to the orthotics known as short leg braces.

What Is a Short Leg Brace?

A short leg brace is a specific type of brace for the foot and ankle that is attached to a shoe. Depending on the condition being corrected, the brace may consist of one metal or plastic bar supporting either the inside or outside of the ankle, or one bar on each side. The brace will be held onto the ankle by adjustable leather or cloth straps. Wearing it will stabilize the affected muscle or joint and hold the foot and ankle in the proper position.

What Conditions Can Be Treated With Short Leg Braces?

Orthotic

Short leg braces are typically recommended to treat foot and ankle conditions such as drop foot and spastic plantar flexors. Drop foot is the inability to lift the front of the foot and is caused by a nerve injury or a compressed nerve.

Spastic plantar flexors affect a person's ability to use the muscles that move the foot down, such as standing in a tip-toe position. Instead, these muscles become tight and stiff. Wearing a brace consistently for a set period can help to restore the muscles to their optimum function and correct any excessive wear on the joints caused by compensating for weak or unstable muscles.
