Whether you’re tackling residential work or completing a large commercial project, a skid steer is an integral piece of heavy equipment. Also called Bobcats, they handle moving and heavy lifting on a construction site. If poor performance is becoming an issue, the hydraulic motor may need repairs. Here are several signs it’s time to see a mechanic.

When to Repair Your Skid Steer’s Motor

1. Leaks

Skid steers rely on a hydraulic motor to move and lift. These systems convert fluid energy and pressure into torque and won’t function properly if there’s a leak. You’ll likely find hydraulic fluids leaking from the motor or pooling below your heavy equipment. It’s often a simple fix in which professionals replace worn seals or bearings. Get this done before worksite contaminants, such as sand and dirt, get into the motor, requiring deep cleaning and possibly a motor replacement.

2. Weak Power

If your skid steer's motor is having problems, you’ll find it can’t lift as much weight or move as quickly, especially on grades. A common issue is the hydraulic motor losing pressure, which means it can’t convert enough energy to function and requires the attention of a mechanic. Aside from pressure loss, the motor could be stuck in a higher speed setting that reduces power in place of speed. Sometimes, the motor only needs to be reset or cleaned. In other cases, new parts will resolve the issue.

3. Vibrations & Noises

Bearings are small components that help transfer energy loads and reduce friction in heavy equipment engines, and they require lubrication. If they don't get that, or when the lubricant is contaminated by dirt and debris, they’ll break as parts in the motor rub together, creating loud noises and causing vibration. Replacing bearings isn’t a complex or expensive job, so handle it now. Should the problem persist, it can damage larger parts, requiring costlier repairs.
