Thermoforming, sometimes referred to as vacuum forming, is one of the oldest methods of plastic shaping, and is still used in custom fabrication today. Fast, versatile, and cost-effective, it is a very popular way to create consumer products, and is one of the fabrication methods available at Min Plastics & Supply in Honolulu, HI. Product designs are first created using computer-aided design (CAD) software, and then sent to a specialized machine for the thermoforming process, which is explained below.

The Thermoforming Process

Thermoforming consists of heating a sheet of plastic until just before its melting point, and then pressing it onto a mold or form. Vacuum pressure is then used to force the sheet to take on the shape of the mold, and the piece is left to harden. This custom fabrication process happens rapidly, making it ideal for most applications. Another benefit of thermoforming is that scrap plastic is easy to recycle. If mistakes are made during fabrication, waste plastic can be converted back into sheet form and reused.

Examples of Thermoformed Products

Many types of packaging, such as “blister” packs, are created through thermoforming as well. Because of the low engineering costs and the ease with which engineers can create and implement design changes, thermoforming is also popular in prototype development. Industries that frequently utilize thermoforming include the automotive, medical, electronics, and industrial sectors.
