When you realize you might be dealing with a bee infestation, it’s important to know when your home actually has carpenter bees in order to call pest control as early as possible. Carpenter bees are quite discreet as they do not swarm and the damage happens over time. While they look a lot like bumble bees, carpenter bees bore small holes in wood and create nests of eggs inside the wooden structures of your home. Keep reading to learn how to determine if your home has a carpenter bee infestation.

How to Know You Have a Carpenter Bee Infestation

1. Visible Bees

At first, you may think this is obvious, but carpenter bees can be difficult to notice. Understanding what they look like will make them easier to see. A single bee in your home may seem like a small inconvenience, but a bit of investigation is needed to determine if there are more bees hiding in your home.

Try to look at the bee closely and see if it is entirely black from the middle of its body down to the tail. If so, it’s a carpenter bee. Bumble bees still have yellow stripes all the way down their body. In addition, while bumble bees stay close to the ground and around flowers, carpenter bees hang out around the wooden structures of your home.

2. Sawdust or Holes in the Wood

As carpenter bees bore tunnels through the wood of your house, they leave behind sawdust that gathers in trails on the floor or other surfaces. The holes they create are almost perfectly circular. Inspect anything made of wood, especially in the foundation or roof of your house, and look for sawdust or holes left by the carpenter bees.

3. Deteriorating Wood

When carpenter bees have been drilling holes through something wooden for a long time, eventually it may crumble and fall. Hopefully, you notice the warning signs before this much damage is done. However, if something does give way, make sure to call pest control immediately to take care of the carpenter bees before they wreak more havoc.
