With the cold temperatures, it’s important not to forget about your plumbing. Without proper maintenance, pipes are prone to freezing, bursting, and other problems this time of year—leading to an unexpected visit from a drain service. Just a few simple tips can make a huge difference in the condition and functionality of your plumbing throughout the season.

5 Ways to Winterize Your Plumbing

1. Keep the Pipes Warm

Pipe insulation tubes are typically made from fiberglass or polyethylene. Have a drain service or plumbing professional wrap your pipes with them, adding heat tape first for good measure. Also, encourage more heat flow around them by letting the sink cabinet doors stay open for periods of time.

2. Insulate Your Home

The warmer your whole home is, the better your pipes will work. Cover the vents in your attic or crawl spaces with cardboard and ensure that the insulation is up-to-date. Check on the insulation in the garage as well, and replace it if you notice that it’s wet. Close the foundation vents to help the insulation do its job.

3. Let the Water Out

Finally, let the faucets drip slightly with cold water when the weather is freezing to reduce pressure from any ice that forms in the pipes.

4. Seal the Windows & Walls

Cracks and holes in your walls and windows will allow cold air to seep inside, increasing the risk of frozen pipes. Examine each wall and window thoroughly and caulk any cracks that you find. Also, apply weatherstripping around the windows.

5. Invest in Additional Equipment

Bib covers are useful for preventing your pipes and faucets from freezing in the winter, and they will keep out drafts all year long. Alternatively, you can get frost-free hose bibs that will deter ice from forming in the first place.
