Independence Day festivities are a great time to bring everyone together, including pets. If your dog will be out and mingling with other friends’ pups, you’ll want to create a safe environment for them. The noise and hectic nature of a Fourth of July party can notoriously be overwhelming, so keep the following veterinarian-approved tips in mind.

Do:

Put citronella candles and bug spray out of reach.

Many homeowners use citronella candles outdoors to keep mosquitoes away. Unfortunately, they can pose a safety risk to your pets. Citronella candles are poisonous to dogs and can cause severe stomach cramping. Smelling the smoke can cause respiratory issues as well, so keep them on a table that’s out of reach. You’ll also ensure your pet doesn’t knock them over and create a fire hazard.

Bug sprays containing DEET are also toxic to dogs and can lead to severe vomiting, seizures, and other health issues. Never spray them on dogs or items the dog may lick, and never leave the canisters within reach.

Update your pet’s contact information.

Independence Day celebrations are scary to many dogs. The noise may cause your pet to run away at a party or community show, so ensure the contact information on their collar or microchip is up to date.

veterinarianA veterinarian or animal shelter can use this information to find out where your pet lives and return them to you. They’ll also have information about existing health issues, medication, allergies, and other details so they can properly care for your companion if anything has happened.

Don’t:

Use fireworks around them.

Fireworks are a serious source of stress and anxiety for dogs. The booming noise can be overwhelming and may even create extended trauma. Many pets cower or run away, so don’t subject your dog to them. Keep them inside any time they’re being used and consider leaving them at home if you’re going out.

Wait to clean up.

You should clean up as soon as your party is over. Curious pets may ingest alcohol or food scraps, some of which may cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other serious health issues. Firework debris often contains residue with toxic substances, so pick up your yard before letting your dog run free.
