Flat feet occur when the arch of the inner foot flattens or never develops after childhood. It's been found that 18 million people share this condition, typically caused by age, injury, or weight. While some experience no symptoms at all, others may feel pain and fatigue along their arches, especially when standing or during weight-bearing movements. Amp up your foot care to better understand the issues associated with flat feet and what can be done to treat them.

What Are Issues Associated With Flat Feet?

1. Plantar Fasciitis

A flat foot throws off the natural composition of the body, stretching the tendons in the foot further than they are designed to go. This overstretching of the tendons can create small tears in the fascia. This is called plantar fasciitis.

The result is usually a stabbing pain in the heel after non-activity, like sleeping or sitting, or after vigorous activity like running. Most cases of plantar fasciitis can be treated at home with stretching, supportive shoe inserts, and icing painful areas of the foot.

2. Shin Splints

The body is a puzzle of connective tissues that hold bones and muscles in place. Fallen arches or flat feet can create a chain reaction that puts additional stress on the tissues that attach your muscle to your shinbone. The body's response is typically soreness in the lower inside part of your leg.

Resting and ice keep shin splints from worsening and reoccurring. Once you are ready to get back to physical activity, invest in shoes with arch support to prevent any further tension on the tissues of the shinbone.

3. Joint Pain

Without the presence of an arch in the foot, it begins to shift inward, creating an overpronation. The feet are the shock absorbers of the body, so when they are flat, the intensity can be much more damaging to surrounding joints in the knees, hips, and lower back.

Proper footwear and orthopedic insoles paired with stretching and physical therapy should help correct this imbalance and protect your joints. Prioritize your foot care and always consult your podiatrist about any longstanding aches and pains associated with flat feet.
