Pregnancy comes with countless emotional, lifestyle, and physical changes. As a result of hormonal and weight changes, a pregnant woman can gain anywhere from 25 to 54 pounds, which contributes to discomfort, aches, and pains. Women commonly adapt their wardrobe and habits but often forget to take care of their feet, despite the amount of pressure they are under during this time.  Here are a few foot care tips you can employ at home, as well as through your podiatrist, to ensure your feet get the attention they need.

How to Care for Your Feet During Pregnancy

1. Size Up for Shoes

During pregnancy, feet can not only swell, but they also change in structure. Hormones cause ligaments to loosen and additional body weight forces the arch of the foot to compress, causing it to become wider and longer. Buying shoes anywhere from a half size to two sizes bigger prevents discomfort while supporting the changes in your lower extremities. Changes in your feet may not be temporary after you deliver your baby, so pregnancy shoes may be a more worthy investment than you think.

2. Prioritize Mobility

Although rest is highly encouraged for expecting mothers, especially in the final trimester, regular exercise can help you stay healthy while preventing excess swelling. Swimming is an excellent form of fitness, particularly because it eliminates any stress on the lower body, including your feet. Taking regular walks is another great low impact way to get your blood moving while promoting low impact movement.

3. Elevate

Elevating your feet will have significant benefits to the way your lower extremities look and feel. For just 20 minutes at a time, three or four times a day, elevation can help combat overpronation, swelling, and varicose veins. For extra foot care, use cushions to prop up your knees, feet, and head when lying on the couch or in bed to help flush excess fluid through the kidneys and out of your system.
