As a new parent, you might be excited about the thought of your child developing their first teeth. Baby teeth eventually fall out, but they still require routine care. While your pediatric dentist will give you more information about your child's oral health, here's a general guide to help you protect your little one's first pearly whites.

A Parent’s Guide to Baby Teeth

When should the first one appear?

The first baby tooth usually erupts by the time an infant is six months old. It’s usually the two bottom front teeth, then the two top front teeth.

Since eruption can cause gum sensitivity, let your child chew on a cool rag or teething toy regularly. Using cold water for the rag may also alleviate inflammation. Try massaging your baby’s gums as well. Wash your hands thoroughly, then gently press against the soft tissue after feedings.

When should I visit a pediatric dentist?

Schedule a trip to the pediatric dentist when your baby’s first tooth appears. The professional will check that it erupted in the right place, is free of decay, and has healthy surrounding tissue.

Then, schedule additional exams every six months. A dental hygienist will clear plaque deposits from between teeth to prevent decay.

How do I care for my child’s teeth?

Oral hygiene begins when the first tooth appears. Wipe your baby’s tooth with a cloth or a finger scrubber approved by your pediatric dentist. Clean their teeth twice a day, preferably after feedings.

Choose an infant-approved toothpaste to fortify enamel and prevent decay. Avoid products with fluoride until your child is six months old, as it can cause discoloration on baby teeth.

What happens if my child develops tooth decay?

Decay-causing bacteria convert sugar into acids, which erode enamel and cause cavities. Decay can lead to gum infections and tooth loss. Since baby teeth guide permanent teeth into place, a tooth that falls out prematurely could affect the positioning of adult teeth.

If your child has a cavity, their pediatric dentist will clean the site and fill it with a natural-looking composite to restore the tooth. They will then recommend ways to prevent future decay, such as avoiding filling your child's bottle with sugary beverages.
