Gum disease affects at least 47% of adults. It develops when food builds up along the gum line, hardening to form plaque and tartar. When the buildup isn't removed, bacteria gets underneath the gums and infects them. Fortunately, diligent dental care will prevent this condition. Here's what you need to know.

How to Keep Your Gums Healthy

1. Quit Smoking

Smoking is linked to gum disease. Cigarette chemicals weaken the immune system, making you more vulnerable to this infection.

Avoid tobacco if you currently don't smoke. Chewing products and vapes also contain toxic ingredients, so steer clear of those as well. If you're a smoker, you’ll benefit from quitting as soon as possible. There are medications and nicotine patches available to minimize dependence until you can stop completely.

2. Brush Correctly

Plaque accumulates around teeth and along the gum line, irritating the soft tissue and potentially leading to gum disease and cavities.

To remove buildup, brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. While brushing, target the gums as well as the teeth by holding the bristles at a 45-degree angle toward the tissue.

3. Clean After Eating

When you eat or drink, sugars and starches end up in your mouth. Without prompt dental care, these turn into plaque and tartar over time.

When possible, brush immediately after snacking or drinking sugary beverages. If you cannot brush your teeth, rinse your mouth with fluoride mouthwash or simply water. Doing so flushes out much of the sugar and food residue to freshen your breath and protect against oral health issues.
