Although teeth can handle a great deal of force, they can still crack or break. If this happens, make an appointment with your dentist for treatment. Depending on the type and extent of the damage, there are options to help restore the tooth and prevent further issues.

How Dentists Fix Cracked or Chipped Teeth

1. Smoothing

When the chip is small and the rest of the tooth is unharmed, the dentist may be able to recontour it. This involves using a tool to smooth the enamel around the damage.

2. Bonding & Filling

For more substantial chips in teeth that are visible when you smile, your dentist may recommend bonding to replace the missing part of the tooth. After a thorough cleaning, the dentist uses a resin composite material dyed to match the tooth color to replace the chipped section. Once the resin is hardened using ultraviolet light, it's shaped and refined to resemble a natural tooth. If the chip is in a back tooth, your dentist will likely give you a filling, similar to what you would get for a cavity.

3. Veneers

Another option to make a visible tooth look like it was never damaged is a veneer, a thin, porcelain shell that is permanently attached to the front of the tooth. Veneers require several appointments, since they are custom made using impressions. In many cases, you'll receive a temporary veneer while you wait.

4. Crowns

If a tooth is significantly damaged or a large portion breaks off, you may need a crown to prevent further damage. A crown is a cap that goes over the remaining part of the tooth that looks and feels like a real tooth. If the damage was caused by extensive decay or an infection deep in the root, the dentist may perform a root canal to remove the infected tissue before placing the crown.
