Dry mouth is a condition in which there is not enough saliva to keep the interior of the mouth wet. Known by the clinical name xerostomia, it produces a dry, parched, or rough feeling inside the mouth and can contribute to tooth decay. Below is an introduction to this common condition, as well as when it should be checked out by a dentist.

Causes

There are a number of reasons why the salivary glands may have trouble with saliva production. On the milder end, it may be caused by not drinking enough fluids and breathing or sleeping with the mouth open. Dry mouth may also be a symptom of dehydration; illnesses like diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and anemia; and as a side effect of radiation or chemotherapy. Additionally, a wide range of prescription drugs, from antidepressants and antihistamines to diuretics and bronchodilators, are accompanied by the side effect of dry mouth.

Impact on Oral Health

dentistThe mouth needs a consistent supply of saliva to wash away food particles and prevent plaque buildup on the teeth and gums. As a result, dry mouth increases the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and fungal infections in the mouth. Dry mouth can also make it uncomfortable to wear to dentures. If dry mouth is a persistent or uncomfortable issue, always visit your dentist.

To prevent dry mouth, practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing at least twice a day. Chewing sugarless gum is an excellent way to stimulate saliva production and keep the mouth moist. Stay hydrated as well, drinking at least eight, eight-ounce glasses of water a day.
