Sewing is a rewarding and calming hobby for many people, and it’s a sustainable way to make or repair clothes, linens, window treatments, and other fabric fashions. Sewing machines let you efficiently tackle sewing projects, whether big or small. As with any machine with fast-moving parts, safety is paramount. Here are some safety guidelines to follow while using a sewing machine.

How to Avoid Injury While Using a Sewing Machine

1. Put Your Hair Up

If you have long hair, pin it back. It may get caught in the machine or block your vision. Tucking it behind your ears isn’t sufficient. Besides, fussing with loose strands of hair may break your concentration and cause you to lose control of  your machine. Keep your hair up to avoid any interruptions.

2. Keep Fingers Safe

Sewing MachineYour fingers should always be at least an inch away from the needle. Always keep your eyes on the needle and your fingers. One glance away may cause them to slip out of position.

3. Use Whole Pins

Broken pins may damage your garment or machine and scratch hands. Remove pins as you go. If you sew over pins, they or the needle may snap.

4. Shut It Off

After every use, turn your sewing machine off, and unplug it. This will ensure your safety as well as the safety of others in your household. Children won’t accidentally turn your machine on, and you’ll avoid any mishaps when cleaning or oiling it.

5. Maintain Your Machine

Keep your machine covered to prevent dust accumulation. You should also change the needle after eight hours of use and oil your machine regularly with a lubricant specially formulated for sewing machines. Each machine has different oiling needs, so consult the owner’s manual. Also, have your sewing machine serviced by a professional every one to two years to keep it in top condition.
