Your reliance on your air conditioner doesn’t halt when summer comes to a close. Given that fall in Mohave County is decidedly warm, it’s important to make sure that your system is prepared to keep you cool and comfortable during the final seasons of the year. These general maintenance steps will help you avoid unexpected air conditioning repairs and keep your system in good shape year-round.

How to Maintain Your AC at Summer’s End

1. Replace the Air Filter

Because they’re designed to trap the harmful particulates, like dust, dirt, and mold spores that circulate throughout your home, it’s important to change the filters at least once every three months. A clogged filter disrupts air circulation, forcing the system to work harder than necessary to cool your home.

That could lead to potential air conditioning repairs if the unit is overworked and put it at risk of premature failure. If you’re a pet owner, replace the filter more frequently.

2. Check the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit houses some of the HVAC system’s most important parts, including the condenser coil, the compressor, and the fan. When the air conditioner absorbs heat from inside your home, it delivers it through the condenser coils via the refrigerant before it’s eventually transported to the compressor.

Unfortunately, the outdoor unit can accumulate debris during spring and summer, leaving these parts at risk of damage or failure. Clean the unit with a hose on a gentle setting, and use a soft brush to gently scrape any dirt of the fan’s fins.

3. Contact Your HVAC Contractor

Many parts of summer AC maintenance are best left to a professional. Warm-weather storms may have caused short circuits or affected the wiring, damaging the capacitor, the motor, or the thermostat in the process. Your HVAC contractor will look for signs of damaged or disconnected wiring.

They’ll also clean the AC coils and the inside of the outdoor unit meticulously to ensure there’s no debris left behind. This is also a good time to consider upgrading the system if it’s old or not performing efficiently. You’ll save money if you choose to keep your AC running through fall.
