In rural areas where homes are set back far from the main road, gravel driveways are a popular choice. Gravel is a cost-effective option when a long driveway is needed, and it boosts the property with its rustic charm. The type of gravel you choose and the size of the stones can make a statement, so it’s important to consider what you want for your home. Here's a closer look at the most common gravel varieties.

Types of Gravel

There are five main types of gravel to choose from, and each has unique properties. First, all-purpose gravel is the most common and consists of larger stones. It's sometimes used as a base underneath other gravel varieties because it provides good drainage and isn't easily moved aside by traffic. Pea gravel pebbles are smooth rocks that don’t get slippery when wet but generally aren't a good choice for a large project like a driveway due to their higher cost.

Next, river pebbles are circular and look beautiful, but they don’t provide the most uniform surface for a gravel driveway. Decomposed granite compacts well and won’t give under the weight of traffic. Lastly, marble chips are white or light gray in color, giving them a luxurious appearance to pair with good drainage.

Common Gravel Sizes

For a gravel driveway, the best size is usually around 1 to 2 inches in diameter, commonly classified as #3. This provides a strong base. Layering stones by starting with a foundation, a middle layer of larger stones, and a top layer of small stones will make your gravel driveway comfortable to walk and drive on while draining well.

#5 crushed stone is a strong choice for the middle layer, while #57 will provide a tight surface level. Drainage is important for driveways to stay in good shape for a long time, so choose a type and size that ensures rainwater can move through it easily.
