3 Tips for Fixing Common Router Issues

1. Reboot
If your internet service has gone out, become intermittent, or has noticeably slower speeds, reboot the router. There are usually a couple of ways of doing this. You can simply unplug it from the wall, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in.
Also, there may be a reboot switch on the router itself; it would be a button you press or a small hole in which a pen-tip can be inserted to turn on the switch inside. Bear in mind that most routers will take a few minutes to fully restart and come back online.
2. Check the Cables
A typical router can have a few different cables connected to it: one from the modem, one from the power source, and others from devices that are directly plugged into it, such as a desktop or laptop computer. Cables can easily get knocked out of place, especially if the router has recently been moved. If your wireless internet service has suddenly stopped working, check that the cables are securely plugged in. Also, inspect the condition of the cables; those that are old or frayed may need to be replaced.
3. Move the Router
You want the router to have clear access to the Wi-Fi signal. While tucking the router under a desk or on the lowermost portion of a shelf keeps it safely out of the way, this positioning can also prevent it from getting the strong signal it needs. As a result, your internet may be sluggish or unreliable. Position the router in an area where the antenna has a wide berth, and don't place it near metal objects or cordless phones.
