A fishing trip is a great way to bond with family and friends, or simply enjoy some solo time out on the water on your own. Whether you're going in a group or heading out by yourself, the perfect trip requires more than packing fishing supplies. Take these steps to ensure your trip goes out without a hitch.

How to Prepare for a Fishing Trip

1. Choose Your Location

Choose a fishing location in advance, taking into account legal regulations. In Wisconsin, for example, fishing limitations are set on which waters and species you can fish on a seasonal basis. Early trout season, for instance, runs from January to May.

2. Check the Weather

You don’t want to plan for a sunny day on the boat with the family, only to have your trip derailed by summer thunderstorms. Check the weather in advance. There are even fishing apps available to help you determine whether fish will be biting given the conditions.

3. Pack Your Fishing Supplies

4. Outfit Yourself Accordingly

Odds are you'll get wet when fishing, so opt for fabrics that keep away moisture and dry quickly, like polyester or polypropylene. A light water-resistant jacket will help keep you try. You will also likely want sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect against UV rays, and bug spray.

5. Get a Fishing License

In Wisconsin, any person 16 years or older needs a fishing license. Kids under 16 don't need one, but they do need to be accompanied by a licensed adult. Make sure to get the paperwork you need in advance.

If you're in the Rome, WI, area, head to Pritzl's Trading Post for your fishing supplies and license. This family-owned business has been serving the community's outdoor needs since 1976. Their business is one-part recreational gear and one-part supermarket, so you can also pick up groceries for your trip. Visit their website to find out more about their fishing and hunting supplies. If you have questions, call (715) 325-2281.
