When it comes to resilience and durability, you really can't beat a metal roofing system. While very low-maintenance when compared to other types of materials, metal roofs still require a little care to get the most out of them. Here are a few things you can do to avoid issues.

Do:

Trim trees situated around your home.

metal roofing

Metal roofing has a protective coating to ward off damage from rain and sun exposure. When you have trees situated very close to your home, the branches may scratch your roof and remove some of this coating. The underlying metal will then be more vulnerable to rust and corrosion, so it's important to keep trees neat and trim around your home.

Wash the roof when necessary.

When it comes to roof stains, a gentle approach is best. Make your own non-abrasive cleanser by mixing a quarter of a cup of mild dish detergent with one gallon of water. Pour or spray the cleaning solution over the stain and use a telescopic soft-bristled brush to scrub it away. After the stain is gone, rinse with a garden hose to remove excess soap and water. When climbing a ladder to access the roof, always have a friend or family member there to assist you.

Don't:

Use the wrong type of cleaning solution.

Industrial cleaning solutions and those with harsh abrasives should never be used on metal. They may cause etching, which can increase the accumulation of dirt and debris on your roof. Etching also detracts from the look of your home and has a negative impact on curb appeal. Stick with the above gentle cleaning methods for the best results.

Walk on the roofing system.

Metal roofs are highly durable, and it's perfectly fine for a contractor to walk on them when performing repairs. However, you should avoid walking on the roof yourself for two important reasons. First, you could become seriously injured should you fall, which is why professional repairs are so important. Second, the contractor you hire will know how to walk on the roof to avoid damaging it. If you lack this knowledge, you may cause more serious damage to the roofing system.
