As their loved ones age, many people search for affordable home health care options to ensure they are properly cared for. One option available to New York residents is applying for the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP). This program is popular for both its affordability and its compassionate care. Below is more information about this program.

What is CDPAP?

home healthcareCDPAP is a Medicaid-based program that allows the recipient of home health care, or their family members, to have control over who provides their care and how it’s done.

Recipients are not assigned a home care assistant from a local vendor or agency. Instead, the family members can interview, hire, and train their own home health care assistants, making sure they get someone who will provide for them exactly how they prefer. Home care assistants can even be a family member or friend, although there are certain stipulations as to who can be a caregiver and when. For example, spouses cannot be caregivers, nor can a parent be a caregiver to a child who is younger than 21 years old.

Who is Eligible for CDPAP Home Health care?

Those who require home health care services must first meet with their doctor to complete a Physician’s Order for Services. This form is then sent out to the local services district, where a nurse will assess the service order and make recommendations on the frequency, duration, and amount of services needed.

If you are eligible for Medicaid, long-term Home Care, AIDS Home Care, or Personal Care Services, this may help you qualify. Many people prefer this program, as it requires the recipient—or a legal guardian or designated family member—to make informed decisions about the care their loved one will receive.
