Regular trips to the dentist are essential for people in all stages of life, including pregnancy. Brushing, flossing, and biannual teeth cleanings should continue as usual, but there are a few adjustments to make to your routine while expecting. Here are some best practices to know.

Do:

Tell your dentist that you’re pregnant.

Routine dental cleanings and checkups can continue throughout pregnancy. However, your dentist may want to avoid anesthesia and x-rays for elective care since there may be small risks of preterm birth or defects. Additionally, some pregnancy symptoms like nausea may cause discomfort during care, so dentists can be ready to take breaks if needed.

Use ADA-approved toothpaste.

The American Dental Association tests toothpaste to ensure that the ingredients are safe for everyone, including those who are pregnant. Ingredients like triclosan, an antibacterial agent, can disrupt hormone regulation and is not accepted in ADA-approved toothpaste. Those with the seal contain fluoride and other safe ingredients that protect teeth and gums.

Don’t:

Undergo x-rays.

X-rays contain radiation, which studies have shown are safe during pregnancy in small doses. However, most dentists will avoid them for routine checkups or elective procedures just in case. If there is an emergency that requires x-rays, they’ll provide protective coverings to limit exposure.

Neglect oral pain.

Pregnancy comes with some aches and pains, and while that backache may be a normal part of pregnancy, tooth pain is not. Pregnant women are at an increased risk for gum disease due to increased hormones and blood volume. Call your dentist if you have any mouth pain, so they can clean the teeth or provide early intervention if necessary.
