Finding safe and secure boat storage over the winter is crucial to protect your vessel. It's also essential that you prepare the boat beforehand to ensure it'll be ready come spring. Here are a few steps to take to protect the watercraft while it's tucked away.

How to Prepare Your Boat for Winter Storage

1. Clean It

Cleaning your boat not only improves its appearance, but it also prevents stains and other defects from getting worse while in storage. Discoloration on your boat's exterior can eat away at the paint, which will require expensive repairs. Additionally, leaving trash and food inside could attract pests. After cleaning, apply a fresh coat of wax for added protection.

2. Change the Oil

Run your engine for a few minutes before pumping so any residual acids and oils are flushed out, and then change your filters for the best results.

3. Add Fuel & Stabilizer

Condensation will build in fuel tanks that aren't completely full, which can rust out the tank's interior. For this reason, add fuel and a stabilizer. Along with preventing rust, a stabilizer will stop fuel from gumming up while your boat's not being used.

4. Use Antifreeze

Adding antifreeze to the engine is an essential winterizing step. Depending on the size of your engine, you'll probably need between two and five gallons of antifreeze in a bucket. Detach the intake hose from the seacock and place it in the bucket of antifreeze. Then, start the engine and let it run until antifreeze is expelled from the exhaust outlet so you can be sure it circulated throughout the engine.
