When planning an overnight stay in Levelland, Texas for work or play, plan on making time to visit the vibrant mosaics around the city. Known as the “City of Mosaics,” Levelland is home to more than 10 pieces located throughout the town on various buildings. The mosaic art technique is more than 6000 years old and involves the arrangement of glass or ceramic tiles in a pattern to form a picture. Consider the following five mosaics as must-sees on your trip.

5 Must-See Levelland Mosaics

1. Wild Mustangs

The Wild Mustangs mosaic was the city’s first, created in 1968 by Don Stroud. Assembled with glass tiles from Mexico, the mosaic was pieced together with help from Stroud’s sons and daughter. This piece of art is located inside the South Plains College Fine Arts building.

3. Land of Soil, Oil & Education

Designed in 1972 by John Meigs with the help of other local artists, Land of Soil, Oil & Education was created to speak to the important industries of Levelland. Farming, oil work, and South Plains College contribute heavily to the economy and are the driving force behind this city. This piece is located on the front of the Chamber of Commerce.

4. Arms of Care

As an homage to the medical professionals who serve the community, the Arms of Care mosaic was designed in 1971 by Burl Cole and other local artists. 5. Hockley County: Past to Present
