From scenic drives to great hotels, road trips are an ideal way to explore the country. Whether you’re hitting the road for business or pleasure, there are steps you should take before leaving the driveway. Here are some tips for planning your next trip to help ensure it goes smoothly.

How to Plan the Perfect Road Trip

1. Get Your Vehicle Ready

Schedule a maintenance appointment with a mechanic about a week before your trip. Have them change the oil and do a comprehensive check for anything that could cause problems, such as low tire pressure or brake fluid.

When it comes time to pack, you should also make sure to include emergency supplies for your car. This includes jumper cables, an inflated spare tire, extra wiper fluid, and an emergency roadside kit. It’s also a good idea to include a blanket in case you’re stuck overnight when temperatures drop.

2. Make Reservations

Hotels

Making hotel reservations ahead of time is important. It not only minimizes expense surprises along the way, but it also allows you to enjoy your time driving without worrying about needing to find a place to stay each night.

If you’re traveling with someone, planning ahead also lets you find hotel accommodations that fit both of your budgets and expectations. Once you have all your reservations, keep the confirmation numbers and hotel addresses in one place, such as in a folder in your glove compartment or in a file on your phone.

3. Bring Entertainment Options

Listening to the radio on a long road trip can quickly become repetitive and boring. If your trip takes you off the highway, it’s likely you won’t get many radio stations. Load your phone with options such as music, podcasts, and audiobooks.

Another option is to check out your local library. Many libraries have audiobook sections where you can check out one or multiple books at no cost.
