Most people think of hotels as being used for “short stays” only, such as overnight or durations less than a week. Commonly, these clean, furnished rooms feature amenities applicable for quick trips, such as mini fridges, microwaves, and small toiletries. And while plenty of these hotels do exist, there are also extended-stay versions for travelers staying a week or longer—even months or years in certain cases. Learn more about the differences between these accommodation options here to determine what’s best for you.

What Is the Difference Between a Traditional & Extended-Stay Hotel?

Layout

Extended-stay rooms often feature separate kitchen areas, such as one-wall or galley kitchens. Since guests usually stay several weeks, these kitchens include ovens, sinks, cabinets, and coffeemakers, in addition to refrigerators and microwaves. Refrigerators can be either mini, small size, compact, or full size. Depending on the hotel, some laundry facilities may be in the rooms, though most feature these appliances elsewhere on-site.

Other common extended-stay layout features include separate bedrooms and living areas. The living areas usually include couches for watching television on flat-screen TVs, as well as desks and chairs that allow guests to work comfortably. The bathrooms in extended-stay accommodations are often bigger, too.

Services & Amenities

Longer stays call for more services and amenities to ensure guest comfort. High-speed internet access is a common extended-stay service, though most traditional options offer free Wi-Fi to guests as well. However, extended-stay options always feature quality, individual Wi-Fi services in each room, so guests do not have to rely on the lobby Wi-Fi.

Other courtesies can include mail and personalized voicemail services, conference rooms with printers, parking spaces, and takeaway breakfast items.

Traditional hotels still offer a wide variety of services and amenities, including coffeemakers, flat-screen televisions, and cold or hot breakfast food. Both types of accommodation are usually near local attractions, businesses, restaurants, bars, universities, and supermarkets.
