Travelers choose to visit Levelland, TX, for a number of reasons—to visit your freshman at South Plains College or a quick overnight stay to attend a rodeo that’s coming to town. But one of the features this town is most known for is its mosaics. These works of art have been popping up all over the area since 1968 and have earned the region its title of “City of Mosaics.” Discover more about this point of pride below.
What Are Mosaics?
Mosaics are an art form that has been around for over 6,000 years. Artists gather small cubes of glass and stone of varying colors. They then arrange them in patterns to form a picture based on their design. Mud or cement is usually used to tie the pieces together.
This can take several days or even weeks to complete, depending on the size of the mosaic, and will require at least 24 hours to dry. In the end, the combination of colors and textures will blend together to create a lasting work of art.
Where Can You Find the Levelland Mosaics?
On the first day of your overnight stay, you’ll want to go to the Fine Arts Building on the South Plains College campus. Here you’ll find “Wild Mustangs,” which is the original mosaic that was created by Professor Don Stroud in 1968. Other mosaics that can be found on campus include “New Beginning-New Life” on the northern wall of the Science Building and “New Morning.”
Next stop should be the south wall of Levelland’s Chamber of Commerce, where you’ll find “Through the Ages,” a mosaic designed in 1994 that depicts the history of the region. Finally, visit Hockley County Courthouse, which is home to a two-part mosaic called “Hockley County: Past and Present.” This piece was designed by local artists, John and Bette Hope, who are working to maintain and preserve these colorful works of art.
